Altaterra and VELUX
help convert derelict land
into public garden

In June 2022, teams from Altaterra and VELUX helped a community project to transform an area of derelict land in Glasgow into a public garden. The project was seen as an important community contribution and one way in which Altaterra and its employees can help be a catalyst for change and make a positive contribution to their community.

A team effort

Earlier this year, Altaterra and VELUX teamed up to help with a community project at SWG3 to transform an area of derelict land in Glasgow into a public garden. SWG3 is Scotland’s leading multi-disciplinary arts venue. The land is part of SWG3’s plans to create a completely net-zero site and a space that meets the need for community green space. Part of this plan is to create a garden “using arts, creativity and nature” that will “help tackle poverty and climate change.”

An important community project

As an important community project, the VKR Employee Foundation made a donation to support it. The VKR Foundation was set up by and is owned by the VKR Holding which in turn owns the VELUX Group, including Altaterra. The Foundation supports community projects and group employees worldwide.

As part of the project, Altaterra and VELUX teams spent a day helping with the transformation. The work included digging and planting as well as attending graffiti workshops. By the end of the day, over 700 hundred trees and shrubs had been planted and the garden was beginning to take shape.

“This is a project very close to my heart and I am delighted the VKR Foundation could support this tremendous initiative which will be beneficial both to the people of Glasgow and the local environment. We are all extremely proud that we could play a part in the funding but also ‘getting our hands dirty’ in the development of The Garden.”

Enthusiasm to create change

The project aligns with Altaterra’s strategy for the next 10 years (one of the principles of which is to treat employees, customers and the planet better than most companies) as well as with Altaterra’s recently released WeCare Sustainability Strategy in which it pledged to create a sustainable business that is carbon neutral by 2030 (Scope 1 & 2) and reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the impact its activities have on the environment, as well as its carbon footprint and social responsibilities.

The enthusiasm of the team to help with and support this project demonstrates just one of the ways that Altaterra employees are keen to be involved in events that operate as a catalyst for change.

Altaterra is part of the VELUX Group yet operates as a separate independent entity. The two companies have complementary identities and goals, that meet the needs of different market segments.
